The Anomaly, by Hervé Le Tellier

Aviation is land (or rather sky) cultivated for juicy science fiction speculations. One need only remember the myth of the Bermuda Triangle, which so soon swallowed up ships like war fighters, or the langoliers of Stephen King that were devouring the Earth under the feet of a commercial plane with its bewildered crew and its strange passengers ...

Now comes a new anomaly, never more accurate in the definition that serves as the title. Because the anomalous has that point of deviation from the analyzed, a point outside of all that is considerable for our reason. And from there Herve Le Tellier offers us, in this winning novel of the Goncourt 2020, a revision of that idea that up there we can reach new planes intuited by Einstein or drawn by the devil himself.

Best of all, the idea takes two very different branches that serve to magnetize very different readers. On the one hand, science fiction lovers seek to understand what could have happened, if it was a matter of an electrical storm that discharged the fury of gods in charge of duplicating reality as a folded paper.

On the other hand, and surely as an essential interest of the author, we find the most personal and even existential notion of what that other self means for all those who traveled on the flight to NY. And the matter becomes even more relevant because it ends up delving into other assumptions about the ambivalence and contradiction of the human condition ...

Synopsis

On March 10, 2021, the two hundred and forty-three passengers on a plane from Paris land in New York after going through a terrible storm. Once on land, each one goes on with his life. Three months later, and against all logic, an identical plane, with the same passengers and the same equipment on board, appears in the sky over New York.

Nobody can explain this incredible phenomenon that is going to unleash an unprecedented political, media and scientific crisis in which each of the passengers will end up coming face to face with a different version of themselves.
