Who watches the watchers? An old doubt that this novel comes to develop. Don Winslow is well versed in the sordid aspects of the American police force, in their most blatant corruption cases.

In this book Police corruption, the author fictionalizes what happens when that possible hole through which corruption can sneak opens, thanks to policemen prone to walking through those shadowy areas.

Dennis Malone is a detective forged in a thousand battles, an arrogant guy who sees himself above all those civilian people he has to serve and protect. On his path to corruption he leads many of his boys, establishing a true cartel embedded within the body.

Eventually, dominated by his ungovernable lust for power and easy money, Dennis Malone transforms himself into a complete mobster. Assassinate another kingpin and seize a gigantic stash of heroin.

His shameless maneuvers and criminal performance end up facing everyone and everything, transforming the novel into a vibrant plot of explosive action.

Curiously, in such a wicked and intelligent guy as Dennis Malone, his dialogues with other colleagues and bosses are extremely interesting. Their ability to justify their actions is manifested convincingly, as if evil were a necessary tool in a society steeped in perennial racial hatred and drug problems. Undoubtedly a controversial character who, despite his role as a perverse character, contributes certain lucid reflections on a current society that sometimes seems left out of the hand of the law.
