There is more than something dangerous about today's revolutions. Almost all are imported with the legitimacy of the conviction of the one who claims against the one who is silent, although even the silence comes from silence, of the annihilation of the opposite. Thus one ends up, immersed in the mass, convinced by the fiery occupation of the streets as the property per se of the most legitimate ideals in the world (those for which it has proceeded to silence those who do not manifest themselves). Thus was born the will and the essence of the current concept of "popular will" in fundamentally retrograde societies.

As the antithesis of so much perverse estrangement from the conceptual, a diaphanous vision, that of the protagonist of this book by Juan Gabriel Vasquez biographical inspiration and novel definition. A work that discovers in not so remote movements the miseries of every revolution. The lesser evil, democracy and its legal frameworks, are the only way of coexistence. Everything else is deliveries, white letters, maximum licenses. And the astonished observers of reality, those who can be branded lukewarm for not radicalizing as any posture is due, rake through reality as Dante would do through hell.

Synopsis

In October 2016, the Colombian film director Sergio Cabrera attends a retrospective of his films in Barcelona. It is a difficult moment: his father, Fausto Cabrera, has just died; his marriage is in crisis, and his country has rejected peace accords that would have allowed it to end more than fifty years of war.

Throughout a few revealing days, Sergio will remember the events that marked his life and that of his father. From the Spanish civil war to the exile in America of his republican family, from the China of the Cultural Revolution to the armed movements of the sixties, the reader will witness a life that is much more than a great adventure: it is an image of the medium century of history that turned the whole world upside down.

Look back it tells real events, but only in the hands of a master novelist like Vásquez could it become this devastating portrait of a family dragged by the forces of history. A fascinating social and at the same time intimate, political and private investigation that the reader will not forget.
