It's been a long time since Maalouf dazzle with his novels on the one hand brimming with gabled scholarship between the Christian and Muslim legacies when he addresses the historical fiction, and on the other with a kind of synthesis loaded with reflection and action when it is launched into the current novel, without further labeling.

On this occasion we are approaching a plot endowed with greater action, with a dystopian background made already recurrent in many great authors of today, perhaps looming over increasingly sinister cetitudes over the world ...

Synopsis

Alec, a middle-aged cartoonist, and Eve, a bestselling novelist, are the only inhabitants of a tiny islet on the Atlantic coast. They are avoided, until the day when an inexplicable breakdown of all the means of communication forces them out of their jealous solitude.

What's going on? Has the planet suffered a cataclysm following the continuing threats of nuclear conflict and large-scale terrorist attacks? What has happened in the nearby islands, on the coast, in the rest of the country, in the rest of the planet? Alec will solve, little by little, the mystery.

Thanks to his old friend Moro, who has become one of the trusted advisers to the president of the United States, he will be able to reconstruct the course of events, until he discovers that, although we have escaped disaster, we have done so in such a strange and unexpected way. that history will not be able to resume its course as before.

The tumultuous encounter of our disoriented contemporaries with their "unexpected brothers", belonging to a mysterious civilization that proclaims itself heir to ancient Greece and that has reached a much more advanced medical knowledge than ours, turns this novel into a modern tale of great dramatic force.

Through fiction and parable, the author deals in a narrative with the major themes addressed in his essays such as "Murderous identities", "The mismatch of the world" and "The shipwreck of civilizations" ...; but opening the door to the hope that "our unexpected brothers" offer us.
