The Kingdom, by Jo Nesbo

The great writers are those capable of presenting their new plots, making us forget at a stroke books or even previous series from which we expected new deliveries. This is the basis for the position of Jo nesbo at the top of the black genre with 3 or 4 other authors. Harry Hole and Olav Johansen will have to wait for another occasion to take up their cases or to recompose their worlds always peering into the most unfathomable abysses. Because now is the time to take a trip to the kingdom.

And it happens that that kingdom is the old home to which one returns when one is already a grown man. Things have gone well and perhaps where once there are only shadows of a past mired in anxiety and guilt, revenge can be erected in the strangest way, from ostentation and a new position of power. Only money cannot buy anything, not in the romantic sense of the matter but rather from the simple consideration that there is no repair for lost souls.

Synopsis

At the top of a mountain, in the moors of Norway, there is an old house inhabited by a lonely man. His name is Roy, he is an expert in birds, he runs the town gas station and a rumor goes around in every house about him. His gray life reopens with the return of Carl, his little brother. They have not seen each other since he went to study in the United States fifteen years ago, after the tragic death of his parents in a car accident.

The prodigal son brings with him his new wife, Shannon, an enigmatic architect: they have devised a plan to build a large hotel on the old family grounds and they could get rich, not only they but also the neighbors of the area.

However, bad omens also soon arrive. Because it is difficult to reinvent yourself in a small community where everyone knows each other, and it will be difficult for the locals to forget certain episodes from the past. Above all, Officer Olsen, the son of the former bailiff, who disappeared long ago under strange circumstances. The Kingdom is a gigantic, addictive and complex thriller that portrays human passions like no other book by Nesbø, and that has been immediately considered by critics a masterpiece.
