Castilian, from Lorenzo Silva

It is a fairly frequent phenomenon to find authors of all kinds who end up landing in the black gender in search of that vein of the best-selling literary niche. What is less frequent is discovering a whole superstar of the most traditional Spanish noir venturing into a different genre.

But of course, the case of Lorenzo Silva it is an aside. Because in his prolific career he indulges in crime profusely, sprinkling it from time to time with essays, investigative books and others. And yes, Silva had also come to historical fiction on more than one occasion, only perhaps this is his most retrograde novel in time, to a Golden Age always full of fascinating intrahistories from the facts manifested in the dryness of the documents. officers ...

Synopsis

The epic revolt of the people of Castile against the abuse of power by Carlos V culminated in the battle of Villalar, on April 23, 1521. The imperial troops overwhelmed those of the Communities of Castile and beheaded their main captains: Padilla, Bravo and Maldonado. That day marked the final decline of a prosperous kingdom that stretched across three continents and whose dissolution gave rise to a new Empire that made use of its people and its resources.

Since then, Castile and the Castilians have been seen as abusive rulers, when in reality their soul was lost on that battlefield and has languished in impoverished lands, depopulated cities and discolored banners.

This novel is a journey to that failure, born of a dream of pride and freedom in the face of the ambition and greed of intrusive rulers and, in parallel, of the late discovery of the author, as a result of alienation and the rejection of others, of his affiliation Castilian and the weight that it has had in his character and in his vision of the world.
