It is curious to think of the first approaches to the Bible when we are very young. In a reality still in the making and governed for the most part by childhood fantasies, the scenes of the Bible were assumed to be perfectly true, without any metaphorical sense, nor was it necessary. According Eduardo Mendoza himself has recognized in an interviewThis primary literary foray into the sacred in collusion with the fantastic, sowed part of the writer that he is today.

And the truth is that the feeling of literary debt is noticeable in this book. Eduardo Mendoza he continues to move with the mastery of his pen, but of course, this time he was faced with already written passages of sacred wills. Only his brilliant imprint could offer a new angle from which to appreciate what has already been narrated and internalized as a doctrine with the singularities of the contrast typical of adulthood.

Because a teacher like Eduardo Mendoza always knows how to find new aspects and nuances with which to recompose scenes so well known to everyone. In fact, to justify current social patterns that still drink (perhaps less and less) from imported morality from sacred texts, the author manages to link the present with what has been studied as Sacred History. To finally describe a kind of "nothing new under the sun" in terms of human behavior and social reality from a possible day 0 until today.

How does the passage of expulsion from Paradise affect any child? What does this old debt to God, this feeling of guilt mean for Christendom?

A couple of questions just as an example. Because even with the skepticism typical of adulthood, what is narrated to us when we are children ends up penetrating. And for better or for worse it becomes an identity mark. In the end, when you discover that you can question everything that the Bible narrates, when you can make your free interpretations, perhaps you end up valuing literature more than what was written so many years ago.

Eduardo Mendoza raises many disquisitions in this new viewing of the sacred writings. From metaphors to the true moral value of the image, from mysticism to fiction, from literature to the soul. In short, a suggestive book that links us all to that childhood impregnated with the smell of incense.

  1. For me this Mendoza, he disrespects the beliefs of hundreds of millions of people and he does it in writing. He ridicules the Holy Trinity and the Prophets of the Bible, not all because he is a coward and a wretch and Catholics do not kill, but of course, the Prophet Muhammad is left without discrediting, not because of forgetfulness, but because of FEAR, that is that that book can only be useful as toilet paper for that guy who must need it badly.
